Executive Director

The Islamic Center of Wheaton (ICW) seeks an experienced, mission-driven Executive Director & Director of Administrative Affairs to provide leadership and oversight of the organization’s operations, administration, fundraising, community engagement, educational initiatives, and strategic development.

The Executive Director will work closely with the Board of Directors, committees, staff, volunteers, and community stakeholders to advance ICW’s mission, strengthen organizational effectiveness, support sustainable growth, and foster a welcoming and vibrant Islamic environment.

This position requires a strategic leader with demonstrated experience in nonprofit management, fundraising, financial oversight, team leadership, community development, and organizational administration.

Key Responsibilities:

Organizational Leadership

  • Support and advance ICW’s mission, vision, and strategic objectives.
  • Collaborate with the President and Board of Directors to implement organizational priorities.
  • Provide regular operational updates, recommendations, and reports to leadership.
  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and operational improvements.
  • Promote organizational excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Fundraising & Development (Critical Function)

  • Lead and support fundraising initiatives to strengthen ICW’s long-term sustainability.
  • Partner with fundraising committees to develop annual fundraising strategies and campaigns.
  • Build and maintain relationships with donors, community leaders, sponsors, and supporters.
  • Assist in securing grants, sponsorships, endowments (Waqf), major gifts, and planned giving opportunities.
  • Support Friday, Ramadan, and special fundraising events, including donor stewardship and pledge follow-up.
  • Develop strategies to diversify revenue sources and strengthen long-term financial stability.
  • Ensure fundraising initiatives are effectively executed by staff and volunteers.

Operations Management

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of ICW facilities and affiliated educational programs.
  • Supervise office administration and operational staff.
  • Coordinate vendor relationships and municipal interactions.
  • Ensure facility maintenance, safety, and operational readiness.
  • Manage organizational records and administrative processes.

Financial Management

  • Work closely with the Treasurer and Finance Committee on budgeting and financial oversight.
  • Assist in maintaining fiscal discipline and responsible resource utilization.
  • Support long-term financial planning and sustainability efforts.
  • Monitor operational expenditures and organizational efficiency.

Human Resources & Team Leadership

  • Assist with recruitment, hiring, onboarding, supervision, and retention of staff.
  • Foster a positive workplace culture and encourage professional development.
  • Coordinate staffing plans and operational coverage.
  • Support volunteer recruitment, engagement, and recognition efforts.

Programs & Community Development

  • Coordinate educational, religious, family, youth, and community programs.
  • Support interfaith initiatives and community outreach efforts.
  • Work collaboratively with committees to implement organizational programming.
  • Promote meaningful engagement among members and community stakeholders.

Youth & Student Development

  • Develop and support youth mentorship and leadership programs.
  • Create opportunities for youth participation in ICW activities, committees, and leadership development.
  • Provide mentorship and career guidance to students and young professionals.
  • Encourage youth involvement in community service, civic engagement, and personal development initiatives.

Educational Support Initiatives

  • Support tutoring, academic assistance, and student enrichment programs.
  • Collaborate with families, educators, and local schools to promote student success.
  • Facilitate partnerships with educational institutions and community stakeholders.
  • Promote programs that integrate academic excellence with ethical, spiritual, and personal growth.

Religious Support Responsibilities

  • Support religious programming and work collaboratively with ICW Imams and the Religious Affairs Committee.
  • Assist with religious activities and community engagement efforts consistent with ICW’s mission.
  • Ability to lead daily prayers, weekend prayers, or deliver Khutbah when needed, appropriate, and qualified.

Governance & Conflict Resolution

  • Assist leadership and committees in addressing operational challenges and resolving concerns.
  • Promote transparency, collaboration, and organizational alignment.
  • Ensure adherence to ICW bylaws, policies, and governance standards.

Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent leadership experience.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in nonprofit management, operations, fundraising, educational administration, community leadership, or executive management.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising and donor development.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Experience with budgeting, financial oversight, and organizational planning.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities within a dynamic, community-centered environment.

Preferred

  • Experience working within Islamic nonprofit organizations.
  • Familiarity with Masjid operations, Islamic institutions, and nonprofit governance.
  • Experience leading fundraising campaigns and donor engagement initiatives.
  • Ability to provide religious support, including leading prayers or delivering Khutbah when appropriate and qualified.
